Maison & Objet – the printed report

This week my report from Maison & Objet January edition was published in Swedish printed magazine Residence. I am super happy with the report but there is always more to say… The person who is doing the layout has his favourites, and the editor in chief has her favourites – so obviously there isn’t enough room for everything. But luckily I have this chanel to post my own favourites. So here are the omitted pieces from the magazine.

In my report for the magazine I focused on five trends I pinpointed. They were:

Coastal Bohemian

Surrealism

Radical Squares (Radikala rutor)

Updated Souk

Aqua Life

Here are the additional examples from the fair I found interesting. I am not saying that the selection in the magazine is bad, I just want to add more. More is more…

  1. Coastal Bohemian

I have this early sensation that “Americana” is coming back as a trend. Still very nostalgic, but we are leaving the Mediterraenean and going more for Palm Springs and the Hamptons. Here are more examples that didn’t fit the pages of the magazine.

Lovely reds, blue and white. No, this doesn’t scream USA but the nostalgic shapes are nice. The pattern could be something from an artist in the 70s but on the west coast of the US. Here Bosa.

Also Bosa. These tiles… OMG, love these. Imagine having a hallway in this, or a front desk of a hotel. Very nostalgic and fun.

A red side table in the sun. From Ethimo. The shape could have been a thing from Calder or Girard in the 50s or 60s, but this is all new.

French brand Honore is obviously on the trend for nostalgia. Is it European or American? I am not sure, but I lived the red, blue and white.

I totally fell in love with new brand House of Capricorn. They are Portuguese and of course this is Portuguese aesthetic – but couldn’t it also be a bit Santa Fe?? Regardled – nostalgic and amazing.

Jonathan Adler surprised me. Is he leaving the 50s inspiration on ceramics and moving somewhere else? Maybe? His tableset is in the magazine but I wanted to just emphasize this new angle with this picture.

These lovely nostalgic stripes looks soo goood.

Red, blue and white textiles from Liberty’s.

Surrealism

Surrealism is obviously on trend. And this selection in the magazine might be a bit “fashion” and on trend. But I saw some cuteness too.

I think we are only on the early stages of surrealism. Everyone talks about it and likes it, but there are actually pretty few examples out there. These glass fishes that work as a candleholder – are absolutely strange and surreal. From &Klevering.

This clock that is also a face, is more traditionally surreal. By Bosa.

This whole segment of food that becomes vases – is big. Here by Spanish Doiy.

This carpet is more suttle. The black is supposed to be lava sand from Lanzarote and the greens are sprouts or plants. By Gandia Blasco.

Radical Squares

We have seen stripes for a while. It’s time to do something different. So I see both classical squares but also diamond shapes.

&Klevering

Ceramiche Refin

Swedish brand Chhatwal & Jonsson

Seletti

Updated Souk

Next chapter is Updated Souk. I am actually pretty convinced that this could be a new longterm trend. It has the rustic, beige thing that every one loves but also a bit of craft. And the new angle is that it sort of flirts with a NorthAfrican thing. Think Marocco or Tunisia.

This is Maison de Vacances. Furnitures are low and rustic. But is is updated with this leopard print. Nice.

I think these low furniture pieces will be big. Here Danish CaneLine.

This could be shaker, Scandinavian or NorthAfrican. Desingner is India Mahdavi for Carlès&Demarquet.

The material and shape here breathes of an updated NorthAfrican aesthetics. From Jakobsdals.

And these glasses with folklore patterns at &Klevering.

These pots by Pomax were part of the story. In general I saw a lot of the updates souk at Pomax, but their images were difficult to use…

And Honore again. This flower pot in ceramics and cast iron.

Aqua Life

Fifth and last trend is the colour aqua. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeell. It’s of course shifting a bit. It is a greenblue thing that kind of reminds you of a pool. And then we’re back to the nostalgic Americana in Palm Springs. Anyway, here are my aqua pictures.

Aqua and green at &Klevering. Nice.

This wall lamp in aqua and mint green by Honore.

Bosa’s nostalgic tiles again.

Sun, pool and aqua at Honore.

I thought this lamp in plastics was nostalgic and fun.

Aqua crystal at Reflections Denmark.

Dansih brand Rice had these two lovely pieces in a nostalgic touch.
